Metro Manila, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons opened their UAAP Season 87 campaign on a strong note, defeating the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, 77-61, on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

JD Cagulangan showed the way for the Fighting Maroons with 17 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds in 30 minutes of action.

UP pulled away with its biggest lead of the match at 50-32 in the third quarter.

The Blue Eagles fought back to stay within striking distance in the final frame, but the Fighting Maroons had the firepower to stave off any comeback attempt.

Prized rookie Jared Bahay led Ateneo with 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
