Gilas officially books FIBA Asia Cup ticket after New Zealand win over Taipei
Metro Manila, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas has secured a ticket to the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 after New Zealand defeated Chinese Taipei, 81-64, on Monday at the Wolfbrook Arena in Christchurch, New Zealand.
With Chinese Taipei's loss, Gilas was able to hold its place in the top two in Group B along with New Zealand. Only the top two teams in each group will qualify for the continental showpiece.
Gilas remained perfect with a 4-0 win-loss slate in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers after escaping New Zealand and dominating Hong Kong in the second window at home.
In next year's FIBA Asia Cup, Gilas will be aiming to improve its ninth-place finish in the 2022 edition held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Gilas is parading a taller and deeper pool compared to previous iterations, and a revitalized program that is highlighted by a gold medal win in the Asian Games last year.
The FIBA Asia Cup 2025 will run on Aug. 5-17 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
