Metro Manila, Philippines — Filipino hat maker Harvy Santos has infused local creativity into the enchanting world of Wicked in designing the film's iconic hat.

Now based in the United Kingdom, Santos shares his inspiring journey from a ballet dancer to a celebrated milliner - an artisan specializing in creating hats - contributing to one of Hollywood’s biggest musicals.

“I originally came from the Philippines,” Santos shared in a social media post of Make it Universal. “My fascination for costumes started when I was six.”

Despite beginning his career as a dancer with the Hong Kong Ballet, Santos pursued his passion for costume design by using his earnings to study garment construction and millinery at Kensington and Chelsea Colleges in London.

His hats, which have been featured in Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, are renowned for their artistry and innovation.

Reflecting on his work for Wicked, Santos described millinery as “like sculpture,” saying, “We experiment with materials and shapes, and that process remains fascinating and challenging.”

Santos said he takes pride in creating pieces that symbolize empowerment and strength.

“Every day, I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. Knowing that I’ve contributed to an epic film is exhilarating,” he said.

Wicked is now showing in Philippine cinemas.
