Metro Manila, Philippines — Former Vice President Leni Robredo will not be returning to the national political arena for now as she filed her candidacy for Naga City mayor on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Robredo filed her certificate of candidacy along with her “Team Naga” line-up, which she said was a result of her “extensive consultations” with locals, groups, and sectors.

The slate showed up at the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) site in pink shirts, Robredo’s campaign color during the 2022 national elections.

Outgoing Camarines Sur Rep. Gabby Bordado will be Robredo’s running mate.

Councilor bets under Robredo included outgoing city officials and incumbent councilors, namely Elmer Baldemoro, Jess Albeus, Gayle Abonal-Gomez, Frank Mendoza, Areiz Macaraig, Dr. Butch Borja, Raquid-Arroyo, Omar Buenafe, Jose Perez, and Oying Rosales.

Robredo’s supporters had urged her to gun for a Senate seat.

In an interview on “Zoom In” aired in July, Robredo said she believes her skill sets are more aligned with the Naga mayor post, adding it was more exciting to showcase her platforms in a local space.

Robredo lost by a big margin to Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos, in the 2022 presidential race.
