Kanlaon Volcano emits ash on Holy Monday

Metro Manila, Philippines - Two ash emission events were seen from the Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island on Monday, April 14, with authorities warning nearby residents of ash fall.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded the first episode at 11:52 a.m. and ended at 2:12 p.m.

The emission produced voluminous ash plumes that went as high as 800 meters.

The second emission began at 2:53 p.m. with a 600-meter tall plume.

Phivolcs said the ash drifted west-northwest of the volcano, potentially affecting communities of La Carlota City, Bago City, and other nearby towns in both instances.

Mt. Kanlaon went on a “moderately explosive eruption” on April 8. 

Phivolcs said Alert Level 3 or “magmatic unrest” remains up over the volcano, warning against entering the six-kilometer radius danger zone.

State volcanologists monitored 33 volcanic earthquakes and a sulfur dioxide flux of 1,931 tons/day from the past 24 hours.
