Metro Manila, Philippines — Gymnast Carlos Yulo will be honored as the 2024 Athlete of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) to recognize his historic campaign in the Paris Olympics.

The 24-year-old bagged a rare double gold in the men's floor exercise and vault, highlighting the country’s century of participation in the Summer Games.

Yulo became the first gymnast since Pia Adelle Reyes in 1997 to be recognized as Athlete of the Year by the country’s oldest media organization.

The awards night is scheduled for Jan. 27 at the grand ballroom of the Manila Hotel.

Yulo is the second Filipino Olympic gold medalist after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz topped the women’s 55 kg category in 2021.

The NSA of the Year, major awardees in other sports, President’s Award, Executive of the Year, Citations, Tony Siddayao Awards, as well as the Hall of Fame and Special Recognition to Filipino Olympians – the Paris Olympics and Paralympics included – will also be handed out in the event.
