Metro Manila, Philippines - A magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted Southern Leyte on Thursday morning, Jan. 23, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The tectonic quake, with a 14-kilometer depth, hit six kilometers off San Francisco town in Southern Leyte which experienced Intensity 6.

The following are the areas which felt the tremor:

+ Intensity 5 - Anahawan, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Libagon, Liloan, Padre Burgos, Pintuyan, San Juan, and San Ricardo in Southern Leyte

+ Intensity 4 - Abuyog, Bato, Baybay City, Hilongos, Hindang, and Inopacan in Leyte; Bontoc, Limasawa, Maasin City, Macrohon, Malitbog, Saint Bernard, Silago, Sogod, and Tomas Oppus in Southern Leyte

+ Intensity 3 - Cebu City; Alangalang, Albuera, Barugo, Burauen, Carigara, Dagami, Dulag, Jaro, Javier, Julita, Kananga, Macarthur, Mahaplag, Mayorga, Merida, Palo, Santa Fe, Tanauan, and Tolosa in Leyte; Surigao City in Surigao del Norte

+ Intensity 2 - Babatngon, Isabel, and Palompon in Leyte; Cagayan de Oro City

Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks are expected.
