PH welcomes Israel-Hamas ceasefire, calls for two-state solution
Metro Manila, Philippines - The ceasefire to take effect this weekend between Israel and Palestine is a welcome move, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement on Friday, Jan. 17.
The deal is expected to pave the way for the release of hostages in Gaza.
“The Philippines calls upon all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law, with particular emphasis on the protection of civilians, especially women and children, and the facilitation of humanitarian assistance to all those in need,” the DFA said.
Manila also called on parties to find a two-state solution for Palestinian and Israeli civilians.
“The Philippines reaffirms its steadfast commitment to a two-state solution that addresses the rights and needs of both Palestinian and Israeli civilians, with the aim of achieving a just, lasting peace and security in the region,” it added.
The Israeli cabinet will meet to give final approval to a deal with militant group Hamas for a ceasefire in Gaza and a release of hostages, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Friday, amidst concern the accord may be delayed, according to a Reuters report.
Hamas senior official Izzat el-Reshiq said the group remained committed to the ceasefire deal.
The ceasefire accord emerged on Wednesday after mediation by Qatar, Egypt and the US. The deal outlines a six-week initial ceasefire with the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces. Dozens of hostages taken by Hamas including women, children, elderly and sick people would be freed in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners detained in Israel.
