Metro Manila, Philippines – Immigration Deputy Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado has been designated as the bureau’s officer-in-charge, the Justice department said on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla appointed Viado to lead the bureau as Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco was relieved from his post.

The designation is effective immediately until President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. nominates a new commissioner.

"It is essential that we assure our people that the services of our immigration bureau will remain uninterrupted and consistent regardless of any transition in leadership. Hence, I entrust the stewardship of the bureau to Deputy Commissioner Viado, who I believe is best fit for the position,” Remulla said in a statement.

Remulla on Monday said he recommended the removal of Tansingco due to several issues, including his supposed failure to manage security and border control issues.

“This has been a big problem for the longest time, we have not been lacking of reminders to the Immigration Commissioner about these problems,” the Justice chief stated.

It was earlier revealed that dismissed mayor Alice Guo, who has been tagged in crimes linked to offshore gaming, has fled the Philippines despite an immigration lookout bulletin order against her.

There were no records of her departure in the immigration system.
