Netflix's live-action 'One Piece' premieres this year

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 31) — Anime fans are in for a treat as the live-action adaptation of manga and anime One Piece premieres on Netflix this year, the streaming giant announced on Monday.

"Adventure is on the horizon! One Piece sets sail in 2023," Netflix posted on Twitter, showing its new poster.

First announced in 2020, the live-action series will have 10 episodes for its first season.

One Piece was created by Eiichiro Oda, who will also serve as executive producer of the adaptation.

The long-running manga was first published in 1997, while its anime premiered in 1999.

The plot revolves around Monkey D. Luffy, who's on a quest to find a mythical treasure One Piece in order to become the Kings of Pirates. He then sets on a journey with his crew, Straw Hat Pirates, in the East Blue Sea.

Mexican actor Iñaki Godoy will star as Luffy. The crew will be played by Japanese actor Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji.

Tomorrow Studios will produce the live-action series while Matt Owens will be the show's writer. Steven Maeda and Becky Clements will also be the show's executive producers.

One Piece manga set a new Guinness World Record in 2022 after selling 500 million copies worldwide. It held the same world record in 2015 for selling more than 320 million copies.

One Piece currently has an ongoing 1,072 volumes of manga and 1,049 anime episodes.
