VP Sara Duterte to run again for office

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 23) — Vice President Sara Duterte announced that she would run for public office in the next election.

“Narinig ko na ang aking kapatid si Mayor Baste at ang aking kuya na si Congressman (Paolo) Pulong nagsabi na hindi sila tatakbo. Baka hindi sila tatakbo sa sunod na eleksyon, so kaya ako nandito dahil mangangampanya ako sa inyo kasi tatakbo ako sa susunod na eleksyon,” Duterte said during a speech in Bisaya, in a video posted by social media user Annie Remonde Baclayon.

[Translation: I heard that my brother Mayor Baste and my brother Congressman Pulong said they would not run. Maybe they won't run in the next election, that's why I'm here to campaign because I will run in the next election.]

Sara, the daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, made this declaration during a visit to Barangay Bago Gallera in Davao City on Monday.

She did not specify if she’s aiming for a local or national position.

The Office of the Vice President has also yet to confirm if she was referring to the 2025 or 2028 polls, as she is expected to hold the second-highest government post until 2028.

The only time a vice president of the country had to leave the position was when former president and incumbent Pampanga 2nd district Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo became the new chief executive after former President Joseph Estrada was ousted from office in 2001.

Sara’s statement came following the Marcos administration’s push for Constitutional amendments. Earlier this month, Sara and her brother Davao City Rep. Paolo Duterte expressed their opposition to Charter change via people’s initiative.

Even after leaving the presidency, her father continues to be hounded by issues. He is being tagged as the principal accused in the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) probe into the bloody drug war. The National Telecommunications Commission has also directed Quiboloy-linked SMNI, where Duterte’s program airs, to stop its operations.

The patriarch previously said that he would run for senator or vice president if his daughter were to be impeached.
