9 suspects in Marawi bombing killed in clash with soldiers
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 27) — Nine alleged terrorists tagged as suspects in the December 2023 bombing in the Mindanao State University (MSU) in Marawi were killed by troops in Lanao del Sur, the Philippine Army reported on Saturday.
The army said the series of firefights with alleged members of Dawlah Islamiya who were "heavily armed" took place on Thursday and Friday in Barangay Tapurong in the town of Piagapo.
“Neutralized individuals were identified as perpetrators of the fatal MSU bombing on December 3, 2023,” its statement read.
Four soldiers, meanwhile, were wounded during the operation and were brought to the hospital, the army said.
According to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), nine high-powered firearms and two improvised explosive devices were recovered from the slain suspects.
“The precision and unwavering dedication exhibited in this operation, particularly in targeting the perpetrators of the Mindanao State University bombing on December 3, 2023, deliver swift and decisive justice for the victims of the despicable attack,” AFP chief of staff General Romeo Brawner, Jr. said.
He added that the operation is a warning against the remaining suspects in the bombing, as well as other criminals endangering the lives of the public.
“The remaining few will face our full force and unshakeable resolve in bringing every single responsible individual to account,” Brawner said.
