SMC supports toll discount for seniors, PWDs
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 23) – San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has given its support to calls to provide a 20% discount for senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWD) using its expressways.
During the joint hearing of the House Committees on Ways and Means, Senior Citizens, and Special Committee on Persons with Disability, SMC infrastructure group head Rafael Yabut said the conglomerate will coordinate with the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) on the implementation of the discount.
Yabut said SMC will also work with the Department of Finance, the National Economic and Development Authority, and Bureau of Internal Revenue on discounting.
To avail of the discount, Albay Rep. Joey Salceda, chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, said the vehicle on which the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sticker is attached should be registered under the name of the senior citizen or PWD.
Salceda also suggested adding an equivalent amount of the 20% discount to the RFID instead of deducting it from the load, to which Yabut agreed.
SMC operates the Metro Manila and Ninoy Aquino International Airport skyway system, South Luzon Expressway, Southern Tagalog Arterial Road, and Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway.
