MARINA suspends 2 vessels involved in maritime mishaps in Cagayan, Bohol

Metro Manila, Philippines — The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) suspended the safety certificates of two vessels involved in separate maritime incidents in Cagayan and Bohol on Saturday morning, Oct. 31.

MARINA said the action was taken against MBca Rose Marie I and MV Ocean Jet 788 for compromising the safety of passengers, crew members, and cargo.

Authorities suspect MBca Rose Marie I capsized in the waters between Dalupiri Island and Fuga Island due to rough sea conditions and shifting livestock on board.

All seven crew members of the motorbanca survived, while six of the 11 livestock animals on board perished.

Meanwhile, MV Ocean Jet 788’s maneuverability was compromised after an electrical failure hit its bridge engine remote control and throttle system, causing the vessel to run aground at the loading dock of Tagbilaran Port.

“No vessel should be allowed to sail unless its safety and seaworthiness are assured. Our priority remains the protection of lives at sea and the prevention of maritime accidents,” MARINA Deputy Administrator for Operations Rear Adm. Loumer Bernabe said in a statement.
