Metro Manila, Philippines — Alex Eala continued to struggle in the Australian Open qualifiers after losing to Jana Fett of Croatia, 5-7, 2-6, in her opening match on Tuesday at Melbourne Park.

This was Eala's third straight exit in the qualifying round of the Australian Open.

The 19-year-old Eala was off to a strong start as she built an early 2-0 lead in the first set.

But Fett showed why she is ranked No. 134 in the world as she won the next five games to gain the commanding edge.

A gritty Eala was able to extend the first set as she found ways to tie the score at 5-all.

A couple of double faults and unforced errors from Eala paved the way for Fett to snag the first set win.

In the second set, a 3-0 lead was enough cushion for Fett to secure the victory.

Prior to her Australian Open campaign, Eala jumped from No. 147 to No. 138 in the Women’s Tennis Association rankings — her highest yet in her career.
