Metro Manila, Philippines — The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons took down the De La Salle University Green Archers in Game 1 of the Season 87 finals, 73-65, on Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Quentin Millora-Brown towed the Fighting Maroons with 17 big points along with nine rebounds and three assists in over 34 minutes of action.

With EJ Gollena and Kevin Quiambao taking charge, the Green Archers had the upper hand in the first half and built a 41-37 edge at the break.

The momentum then shifted to UP in the third period as JD Cagulangan sparked the offense for the Diliman-based squad.

After a hot shooting in the first two quarters, Quiambao went cold when La Salle was searching for answers to the Fighting Maroons’ onslaught at the crucial stretch.

Gerry Abadiano nailed the clutch three-pointer to extend UP’s lead, 70-63, with 40.1 seconds left in the final frame.

Cagulangan had 13 points and five assists, while Francis Lopez added 13 points and six rebounds for the Fighting Maroons.

Quiambao finished with 19 markers and 11 boards for the Green Archers.

UP has the chance to end the series and complete its redemption campaign in Game 2 scheduled on Dec. 11 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
